Commenting on the case of Abbas Bagherian, the Iranian gay asylum seeker who sought refuge in Cyprus, Liberal Democrat justice and human rights spokeswoman Sarah Ludford MEP welcomed the decision of the Cyprus Minister of the Interior to grant him resident status.

MEPs have pressed for EU action to stop the declining bee population which threatens not just honey but the pollination of plants and thus food production.

MEPs have called on EU states to ensure swift ratification and implementation of the Convention on Cluster Bombs adopted in May this year. It opens for signature in December and will come into force once 30 ratifications have been obtained.

Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks addressed a formal sitting of the European Parliament as part of the European year of intercultural dialogue.

In time for World Aids Day, MEPs are set to endorse a resolution on HIV/AIDs, calling on the EU Commission and Member States to formulate a comprehensive strategy for early diagnosis and care.

Labour Euro-MPs have defied and embarrassed Gordon Brown by voting with other Socialist MEPs in the European Parliament to axe the UK's opt out from the EU Working Time Directive.

Chinese political activist Hu Jia has won the European Parliament's Sakharov prize for freedom of thought. The award goes to individuals who have made an important contribution to human rights or democracy, and previous winners include Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Xanana Gusmao of East Timor.

The European Parliament today approved a revised Directive on timeshare holiday rights. The new legislation will cover established timesharing holiday properties as well as newer forms of holiday clubs centred around boats, caravans and cruise ships. It aims to better protect consumers by clarifying their rights, including provisions such as a 14-day cooling-off period to buyers after signing the contract and easing access to court in the event of a dispute.

Tories attempt to delay vote on key resolution

The House of Lords has ruled in favour of the UK government - which appealed against previous court rulings - and said that the Chagos islanders have no right to return home.
