London Assembly LibDems back campaign to save Marylebone Farmers' Market10.41.13pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 21st Aug 2008
The campaign to save Marylebone Farmers' Market and keep it in its current location has received a boost by winning the support of the Liberal Democrat members of the London Assembly. All three - Dee Doocey, Caroline Pidgeon and Mike Tuffrey - went online at http://campaigns.libdems.org.uk/farmersmarket and signed the petition to save the market. Westminster City Council are proposing to build on the site that hosts the weekly market, potentially threatening the future of the market in this location. Welcoming their support, Liberal Democrat campaigner Stuart Bonar said: "I am really pleased that Dee, Caroline and Mike are backing the campaign to save Marylebone Farmers' Market. "This market to so special to a great many people, who all feel very strongly that it needs to stay where it is. The present site, just behind Marylebone High Street, is perfect. It is right next to some absolutely first-class shops selling top-quality produce. The market helps bring the area to life every Sunday. We need it to stay where it is." The deadline for responses to the consultation on the future of the site has been extended into September, giving people more time to sign the petition and show their support.
